The runic divination, used to magical purposes in addition to being a writing system, has been attested by historical proof. It is the cas since the first epigraphic vestiges from the Roman iron age to the German iron age, with non-linguistic writings and the word Alu. An Erliaz seems to a person versed in the runes, including in their magical appications, according to medieval sources, especially the poetic Edda. The Sigrdrfuml mentions "victory runes" ton engrave into a viking sword, "some on the handle and some on the inlay, and call Tyr two times". In addition to the "victory runes" mentioned in the Sigrdrfuml, the poetic Edda seems also to corroborate the runes magical importance, the Hvaml where Odin mentions the runes in a context of divination, healing and necromancy.

Borrowed to the vlkisch belief, the rune is one of the most used symbol by the national-socialist regim, under the name of Sieg rune (victory rune). The doubled rune is the Schutzstaffel symbol. Less known since non visible on the uniforms and the occupied countries, the Sieg rune is also one of the main emblems of the Hitler youth, and is part of the Sturmabteilung (assault section) one. Sl is furthermore visible in the Black Sun symbol. The Sieg rune coupled to the key of the Leibstandarte division forms the 12. SS-Panzerdivision Hitlerjugend coat of arms.
